Keeping Family Memories Alive for Generations

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Sybil Imel, business coach and family woman, to talk about her passion for capturing life’s significant moments.

Why are photos and videos necessary? Photos let you revisit moments of love and support when you need them most.

What’s worth capturing? I err on the side of taking the picture. Once I was photographing building a snowman with my adult children and they said, “Mom, come on, you don’t need to do that,” but I’m so glad I did because that photo reignites that day that I might not have remembered otherwise.

How do you incorporate storytelling? Narrate what’s happening or ask the person you’re recording questions. Also, with social media you have many captioning options. I would pay money to have video of my grandmothers or dad cooking. I lost all three of them way too early. Our family still uses their recipes at every gathering, but what I wouldn’t give to have footage of Dad making clam chowder.

What meaningful memories have you captured? I want my future grandchildren to see my vibrant life and feel connected. I made a goal of learning to wake surf and now I have video of our whole family doing it. I want posterity to see where their traits come from.

How many photos are in your phone? At one point I had 85,000 media files. Right now I have 31,296 videos and 6,782 selfies. That’s pretty awesome considering some women don’t have any pictures of themselves doing the things they love. And with the cloud, it’s easy to store everything.
